England will field four new caps – Tyrrell Hatton (Harleyford, BB&O), Craig Hinton (The Oxfordshire, BB&O), Garrick Porteous (Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland) and Ben Stow (Rushmore, Wiltshire) - in their 11-man squad for the Home Internationals at County Sligo Golf Club in Ireland on 10th – 12th August.
The rest of the team is: Todd Adcock (Nevill, Sussex), Steven Brown (Wentworth, Surrey), Dave Coupland (Boston, Lincolnshire), Ben Loughrey (Wrag Barn, Wiltshire), Neil Raymond (Corhampton, Hampshire, IoW & CI), Jack Senior (Heysham, Lancashire) and Andy Sullivan (Nuneaton, Warwickshire). The non-travelling reserve is Ben Taylor (Walton Heath, Surrey).
The squad shows several changes from the side that beat Spain at The Berkshire in May, one player having turned professional, while Senior is the only survivor from the side that played in last year’s Home Internationals, eight of that side having joined the paid ranks.
Hatton, 19, won the Czech Amateur and lost a playoff for the County Champions Tournament last year. This year, he has won the Darwin Salver, was runner-up in the Lagonda Trophy and was a semi-finalist in last month’s English Amateur Championship. He is lying third in the Titleist/FootJoy EGU Order of Merit.
Hinton, 22, qualified for the Open Championship at Royal St George’s but missed the halfway cut. He was recently added to the England A squad having finished tied fifth in the Brabazon Trophy and equal sixth in the Portuguese Amateur.
Porteous, 21, is a former under 16 international who was denied a boys cap through illness after being selected in 2007. That year he was second in the Fairhaven Trophy and third in the Carris Trophy while he recently finished runner-up in the Tillman Trophy.
Stow, (picture © Tom Ward) 19, has enjoyed a successful 2011, winning the Welsh Open Youths and the South West Championship, finishing runner-up in the Welsh Open Stroke Play and equal fifth in the Brabazon Trophy.
Adcock, 26, English champion in 2008, earns a recall, having not played for England since the match with Spain in 2009. Brown, 24, is the new English champion, while Coupland, who reached the last 16 of this year’s English Amateur, made his international debut in this summer’s European Men’s Team Championships in Portugal.
Loughrey, 22, won the New South Wales Cup in Australia last winter, finished third in the Welsh Open Stroke Play and made his England debut against Spain in May, Raymond, 25, also made his debut against the Spanish after winning the Brabazon Trophy, while Senior, 23, an international since last year, won the Lytham Trophy in May and reached the quarter finals of the English Amateur.
Sullivan, 24, has been a frequent winner over the past two years, his 2011 successes being the New South Wales Medal in Australia, the Selborne Salver and the Scottish Open Stroke Play. He made his England debut in the European Team Championships and is currently second in the Titleist/FootJoy EGU Order of Merit.
England will be defending the Raymond Trophy after regaining it at Hillside in 2009 and retaining it last year at Ashburnham.
