The President, Geoff Titt (West Wilts), reported:
"2011 will go down as a milestone year in the history of Wiltshire golf. In our 87th year we have achieved the ultimate accolade in winning the English County Championship. Qualification for the English County Finals takes place during South West Week, which this year was held at Saunton. In addition to qualifying for the English finals Wiltshire won the match play trophy, whilst Ben Stow won the Individual and Colts South West Championship and Jordan Smith gained the Clifford Burden Trophy for the player with most points won during the match play event. A clean sweep by Wiltshire for the week. Congratulations go to our Captain Kevin Philips and to all the players who took part in these two major events.

The County also competed in the Channel League, Wessex League, Junior Channel League and Senior Channel League. Wiltshire were strongly represented in the annual SWCGA “ v”  The Midlands match held at Wrag Barn, fielding 4 out of the total of 10 players in the team. The Wiltshire boys achieved a 100 per cent record in the match winning all their foursomes and singles games.

Although we are a small county regarding the number of clubs and golfer we now have 4 current players who have gained  English honours, Ben Stow and Ben Loughrey at full international level whilst  Josh Loughrey and Jordon Smith have been recognised at “A” squad level. Congratulations to these 4 and players and indeed to all who represented Wiltshire at all levels during 2011, the county can be truly proud of you.

Congratulations to all who won county and regional competitions both team and individual this year. Ben Stow (Rushmore) County and Colts Champion, Chris Stewart (Broome Manor) Match play Champion, Luke Gorman (Bowood) Junior County Champion, David Lewis (Marlborough) Seniors County Champion and Ben Amor (Marlborough) SWCGA U16 Champion.

The County Foursomes was won by Andy Hankin and Albert Mutch (Salisbury & South Wilts). In the club team events Cumberwell took the Team Shield, Kingsdown the Coombe Salver, Ogbourne Downs the Junior Team Shield and Tidworth the Ramsbury Shield.

My aim as President is to raise the profile of the County Union and give more opportunities to the average club golfer to take part in County events. A new initiative this year was the introduction of a charity AM AM event, all clubs within the county were invited to put in a team. The event was kindly hosted by High Post and we raised £3k for  “On Course Foundation” a charity which helps rehabilitate injured service personnel through the medium of golf. 20 Teams took part this year and I would like to think we could increase that number next year when the event will be held at Wrag Barn on 18th August.

Another new event in 2012 will be the County Divisional Championship. The competition will be an 18 hole event off handicap. Players in Cat 3 & 4 combined will play Stableford whilst those  in Cats 1 & 2 will play medal . The outcome will be to determine Cat1, Cat2 and combined Cat3&4 Champions. The tournament will be held at Kingsdown Golf Club on 27th May and is a great opportunity for every golfer in the County to become Champion in his own handicap category. Details will be available in your club and on the web.

Of course none of our competitions and matches could take place without the cooperation of the clubs and I would like to formally place on record my sincere thanks, both personally and on behalf of the WCGU, to all the clubs and their members for allowing us the use of their facilities and for the cooperation of the management and staff at the clubs for their help and assistance in running the various events.

Thanks must go to our sponsors, to Wadworths Brewery for their continued support. Also to Premier Training who sponsored the Team for the English County Finals. Norman Basson the owner of Premier Training has also agreed to provide sponsorship to the WCGU in 2012.

Some restructuring of the way we operate as an executive has been undertaken this year with the setting up of sub committees/working groups to manage the day to day business of the union, eg. The Finance Group, to set agree and manage budgets which I believe has proved very worthwhile. Sponsorship and Marketing from which the ideas for the 3 year plan for Wiltshire Golf arose and a Competitions working group who constantly review ideas for competitions. Other areas dealt with in this way are Squad Development and EGU Policy. None of these sub committees have the authority to change WCGU policy themselves; all proposals for change have to be approved by the Executive.

At the AGM  3 people retired from the Executive and I would like to thank each of them for their support to the WCGU and to me personally. To Malcolm Nixon who took over as President at short notice in 2009, for the work he did during his term of office and as immediate Past President, also for his support to me whilst learning the ropes and during my time as President. To our Captain Kevin Philips who has supported the County as a player for many years, thanks for all you have done and I trust will continue to do as a player, you retire from office on a high as Captain of the English County Champions.  To Mike Inskip who  served for 2 years as a Council Rep member on the Executive, thank you for your help and support.

I would also like to place on record my thanks to our Secretary David Lewis for all his hard work advice and guidance and to the members of the executive for their support throughout the year.

Finally I would like to say how much I have enjoyed my first year as County President. It has been a privilege to represent the county at all the golfing and social occasions and I look forward to 2012 with eager anticipation."
