On a beautiful, sunny Spring day players were welcomed to the newest member of the Wiltshire Union, Rushmore Golf Club, on the Southern boundary of the County. With spectacular views across Cranbourne Chase as far as the Isle of Wight and set in marvelous parkland competitors enjoyed the friendly Clubhouse and hospitality of Ben and Anne, Club Stewards of the year in 2007 with good reason.
The golf proved a more challenging affair. The scores in the morning Foursomes failed to get close to the par of the course as players struggled on the undulating greens and the need for good course management among the mature trees and water features. Finally, within the last few groups, three pairings managed to break par and finish within half a shot of each other. Mark Froggatt and Paul Steer, finishing with a double bogey at the last which cost them the title and also second place, on count back, to Roland Lovett and John Wiltshire. Both pairs had gross 84 off a handicap allowance of 13.5 to finish on 70.5.
The winners were Javed Rogers and Ian Hackett, representing North Wilts and Ogbourne respectively who shot a gross 80 (the lowest gross), nett 70 to win by the half shot.
In the afternoon Betterball competition scores improved dramatically and local knowledge came to the fore. Kevin Stow and Nick Chant from Rushmore finished third with a nett 66 and David Butler with partner Roger Morris managed a very fine nett 64 for second place but the winning pair from the host Club, Neil Hiscock and Richard Chatfield went one better with a nett 63. Great scoring off 3/4's handicap allowance.
The Captain of Rushmore thanked all the competitors for making the day a success and the trophies were presented by the Wilsthire President, Malcolm Nixon.
