County Dinner

The Annual Dinner of the County Golf Union was held at Cumberwell Park on Friday 6th March and was well attended by 137 members and guests of the Wiltshire Golf Union.

After the meal guest Speaker PETER McEVOY, one of the greatest amateur golfers of recent years having played in nine Open Championships and three US Masters, recounted some of his experiences in the game. The first British Amateur to make the cut in the Masters, Peter was a very good player but playing alongside the greats of the game he understood the real gulf between the good amateur and the best professionals. In his first experience at Augusta, as the Amateur Champion, he was drawn to play with Jack Nicklaus and, struggling with his game, watched as the Golden Bear got to 6 under par with an eagle putt on the 15th as Peter, still only 1 over playing the hole, found the trees and took 9. Back down to earth!

Peter though had a great career in amateur golf, playing for England on 153 occasions and winning 103 of his matches...not a bad record and a very interesting and amusing speaker.
