South Western Counties Seniors Golf Association Meeting (Over 50s)
on Mon 19th , Tues 20th , Wed 21st , Thurs 22nd September 2010
at Yeovil Golf Club, Dorset
Wiltshire we were unable to retain the Team ‘Medal Championship’, coming just three shots behind winners Dorset, it was still an excellent achievement from our small squad of players.
However Wiltshire won the ‘Inter-Counties Team Foursomes Matchplay Championship’ which is the main event held over the three days, this was a superb achievement.
Coming back from a disappointing 2.5 – 1.5 defeat to Gloucestershire in the first match, where every game went to the 18th hole.
Then winning the remaining games as follows:
Beat Cornwall 4 – 0, Devon 2.5 – 1.5, Dorset 3 – 1 and Somerset 3 – 1.
Particularly satisfying was the win over the English County Seniors Finalist Dorset.
Cold statistics do not tell the whole story and there were many nail biting experiences for all players.
A special mention of our top pairing Alan Feltham and Rick Smart, remaining unbeaten throughout the competition, halving one game and winning their remaining four games.
Roger Searle and Brian Townsend won their three matches and Roger also combined with Simon Davis to win their Two matches. So Roger won all his games.
It was left to Henry Burt to hole the winning putt on the 17th green of the last match on the course.
All our players made a positive contribution to the event.
Whilst golfing ability is the main requirement, also important in any team, is the spirit and camaraderie of its members. I feel that this was excellent throughout the week. From those who played in all the matches to those who played in just one match.
From a Kingsdown Viewpoint:
AF and RS already mentioned were without doubt the Top Foursomes Pairing in the event.
Bruce Strickland, Steve Kelley, Nigel Phillips and Wiltshire Captain Ken Owens were also able to make vital contributions to the teams’ points total and should be congratulated.
From a High Post Viewpoint:
RS, BT and SD are already mentioned. Tom Inch and Clive Waldron made a valiant effort in the Gloucestershire match losing on the 18th green to a strong pairing.
Henry Burt played all the matches and holed the winning Matchplay putt. Good old ‘Enery’!!
