With the weather promising a mixed bag of sun and showers the senior golfers of Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, resplendent in a new team kit, met up at the picturesque and immaculately prepared, Henbury Golf Club in Bristol for Wiltshire’s second senior Channel League fixture of the 2011 season.
In the morning foursomes the lead fluctuated in all 5 matches with three being decided on the last green. At lunch however, Wiltshire were down 2-3 despite wins for Paul Bloomfield and Jerry Gegg and Richard Jeffrey and Guy Piercy.
The afternoon saw the showers move in and keeping dry, whilst cool in the clammy conditions, became a problem for most. In the early stages of the singles it looked as if Wiltshire might be building the foundations of a surprise comeback but, unfortunately, that didn’t transpire in the end and the strength in depth of the Gloucestershire team came to the fore. Despite wins for Bloomfield, Jeffrey and Gegg and a half point for Michael Saunders, both the singles and the overall match were lost. The 9.5-5.5 score line probably doesn’t quite reflect the closeness of the match however, Gloucestershire were, in the end, worthy winners.
Wiltshire’s next match will be against Gwent at St Pierre on 29 June.
