After a week spent caddying for the Wiltshire team at South West Week County Secretary, David Lewis arrived at his home club for the Seniors Championship with his personal expectations low. But as defending champion and with home course advantage he was determined to put up a defence of the title and was delighted to be paired with Kevin Batchelor who he had last seen on their final day at school together in Dorchester 40 years before.

Playing in the last group as a two ball the pair found the course set up extremely challenging with so many of the pins tucked away behind bunkers and on slopes but a steady, 5 over par 77 left David tied with Nigel Phillips from Kingsdown who had posted his score earlier in the day. Another three hole play off and two of the same three who contested in 2010, but fresh from the course David hit approaches to 6 feet and 12 feet on 16 and 17 for pars while Nigel made bogies. And when Nigel found the fairway bunker on the 18th and, striving for maximum distance, called a double hit penalty on himself it was all over.

In his acceptance speech David thanked his caddy, Ben Amor, the newly crowned South West under 16 Champion and the sportsmanship of his opponent who had endured the play off disappointment for the second time. 

The Championship committee will be reviewing suggestions made by a number of players that a seeded draw would be preferred and that closer liaison with the host clubs should be adopted to ensure appropriate course set up.
